Joon Faii Ong’s mission to change lives
Physician, scientist, and bioengineer Joon Faii Ong is a man on a mission. Together with his team and his company, GyroGear, Dr. Faii Ong has developed GyroGlove. Once produced and distributed, this breakthrough product has the potential to help millions of people affected by hand tremors.
The GyroGlove harnesses the stabilising properties of mechanical gyroscopes. The gyroscopes instantaneously and proportionally counteract the force of hand tremors, effectively stabilising hand movement. Dr. Faii Ong and his team went through thorough planning, design, and testing stages, working closely with patients suffering from diseases that cause hand tremors, such as Essential Tremor and Parkinson’s disease.
In 2015, GyroGlove was one of the winners of MedTechSouthEast. According to Dr. Faii Ong, MedTechSouthEast has significantly aided GyroGear in the design process. He also notes how fortunate they are to have an invention with such potential impact. However, Dr. Faii Ong also explains that it takes critical, multi-industry expertise to manifest this potential and bring the GyroGlove from prototype to commercialisation. This is a massive part of his mission.
Dr. Faii Ong is also optimistic as early-stage testing of GyroGlove demonstrated up to 85% reduction in tremors. Follow-on testing on human patients is currently being organised.
