The GyroGlove, the new wearable from tech company GyroGear, is a glove designed to counter hand tremors caused by Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders that cause bodily tremors.

Joon Faii Ong, the mind behind the GyroGlove, believes that more and more people will need the glove in the future. And through GyroGlove, Joon Faii Ong hopes to reduce the use of drugs for counteracting hand tremors, given that the majority of these drugs have been proven to carry adverse side effects. These drugs also work for a limited time of maximum 10 years.

What GyroGlove does is that it puts out a force that compensates for any hand tremor, no matter how severe, and helps patients retain the balance of their hands. Through this technology, the tremors are dampened as patients experience the freedom to move their hands as intended. This helps them to carry out their day to day activities such as eating, drinking and opening the door with a key.

More than 10 million people worldwide have Parkinson’s, a progressive neurological condition that affects the cognitive ability and physical movement. One of its prevalent symptoms is tremors, especially of the hands. What starts as light hand tremors can progress to something that hinders patients’ daily routines. And while the tremors cannot be cured, up until now, the only effective way of controlling them was through the aforementioned medication, which again has side effects that include nausea, gait disturbances, involuntary changes in mood and compulsive behaviour.

On a final note, Joon Faii Ong’s GyroGlove will not only help patients suffering from Parkinson’s but also those with hand tremors caused by disorders such as the lesser known but more prevalent Essential Tremor. Other conditions that may cause tremors include multiple sclerosis, hyperthyroidism, and stroke.
